Beneath the Lines

Created from 2020

In moments of boredom, my sketching process is usually free-flowing and used as a way to practice different techniques or simply just play around. The use of scribbles, hatching, and a variety of line types result in random, sometimes abstract figures. These figures are at times inspired by myself, but certain features develop after layers of marks and the result of finding shapes between the lines.

The idea behind this work is to use these illustrations as the subject of finished pieces, instead of leaving them as doodles. Primarily found in my old notebooks, sketches were broken down and enhanced, therefore bringing forth new ideas that may not have been present in the original sketch. This work is a way to help me understand why these doodles appear the way they do, and what themes may be hidden beneath the subject.
